The Natural Power of Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique that promotes relaxation and relief in our physical and energy bodies. It can bring balance, harmony and a general feeling of well-being within. It has been around for thousands of years, but it's current form was first developed by a Japanese man named Mikao Usui, who reportedly taught 2,000 people the method during his lifetime. The practice spread to the U.S. through Hawaii in the 1940s, and then to Europe in the 1980s. I had the chance this week to sit down with Miele Mohammed, a Reiki energy practitioner and yoga teacher with Roots & Space, to learn more about her experience and the healing energy of Reiki
Marcia: What is Reiki?
Miele: Reiki connects with the Universal life force
energy that is all around us and present in all living things. It's similar to the caring touch that you would give to a loved one in distress except the healing capability is greatly magnified. Another amazing aspect of reiki is that it doesn’t use your personal energy so the practitioner is never depleted instead we become the conduit for the energy to move through.
Marcia: Is Reiki connected to any particular religious system or belief?
Miele: No. While Master Usui studied at a Buddhist monastery, he is said to have also explored Christianity, Taoism, history and medicine. One of the beautiful aspects of our life force energy and reiki is that it can support our personal beliefs whatever they are. To me, reiki is the energy of love and healing.
Marcia: What are some of the benefits of Reiki?
Miele: Relaxation and stress relief are some main benefits but it can vary in many different ways depending on the person and where they are on their life path. For me, the impetus to try reiki was because of physical pain from a back injury. While it did provide some relief, it had a profound impact on me emotionally and spiritually. It helped me heal in ways I never expected or imagined.
Marcia: How did you discover Reiki?
Miele: I had been in an accident about 10 years before and I was living in excruciating pain because of it. A dear friend of mine would always be on the lookout for different modalities and types of bodywork basically anything that could possibly help me get out of pain. When he described energy healing, it was like a foreign language. I had no idea what that meant but I was willing to try anything. When I had my first session, I was surprised that the Reiki energy just tapped right some of the emotional baggage I was working through, and helped me move through it and see it from a different perspective. It helped me find peace and heal in a way that I never imagined. It gave me the courage to step on to the path of self discovery.
Marcia: How did you go from being a client to a practitioner?
Miele: My friend who had recommended Reiki to me had decided to learn it. And, completely on a whim, I decided to do it as well, just for fun. At the time, I didn’t know one had to be attuned to reiki by a Reiki teacher/master. After we completed our level 1&2, we decided to do our master level with the practitioner I had my first session with. One of the requirements of her 9 month program was that you had to teach one class. It was something I never intended, then all of a sudden, I taught my one class and I was absolutely captivated. I had never felt so much in the flow or on the right path as I did in my first class.
Marcia: Anything you'd like people to know or anything else you'd like to share?
Miele: Reiki has literally changed me in the most positive ways. It has opened me up to a very different life; a life where I feel I have much more awareness of others, but especially of myself. I am a braver person, always ready to explore my limitations and I live more from my heart because of reiki.
Miele works with Reiki clients one on one and leads a monthly Community Reiki Healing Workshop online through Roots & Space. If you'd like to explore this modality further, we invite you to join us for the monthly workshop, or reach out with any questions for Miele at
